Abrasive Consumption Calculator
This calculator estimates abrasive consumption based on the operating parameters of your blasting equipment. It helps anticipate new abrasive additions in order to maintain a stable operating mix and improve process control.
How to use this calculator
step by step
1. Select your application
Choose the process type that matches your operation: cleaning, preparing or peening. The application affects abrasive stress levels and estimated wear rate.
2. Enter electrical parameters
Input motor power, voltage and operating current intensity. These values are used to estimate abrasive flow through the turbines.
3. Define turbine configuration
Enter the number of turbines and blasting speed. Projection speed has a major impact on abrasive consumption due to the increase in impact energy.
4. Add abrasive characteristics
Enter abrasive grade. Harder or larger media may generate higher fragmentation depending on operating conditions.
5. Review consumption results
The calculator estimates consumption per useful amp and total machine consumption in kg/h to help anticipate abrasive replenishment requirements.
Understanding your results
Consumption per useful amp (kg/h)
This value represents abrasive consumption relative to the effective operating current used for blasting.
Useful current corresponds to the difference between operating current and idle current. It allows consistent comparison between machines or process settings.
A high value may indicate:
- high blasting speed
- increased impact energy
- accelerated abrasive breakdown
- more impacts so more productivity
Total machine consumption (kg/h)
This result estimates the total abrasive consumption of the full installation.
This indicator helps:
- anticipate abrasive orders
- maintain a stable operating mix
- avoid particle size drift
- improve process repeatability
Displayed values are based on nominal operating conditions and standard calculation assumptions. Actual production conditions may significantly affect consumption depending on:
- part geometry
- surface hardness
- hotspot positioning
- air separator adjustment
- turbine and equipment condition
- leakages of abrasive on the machine
In some operating conditions, actual consumption may be up to three times higher than the theoretical estimate.
FAQ
Why does blasting speed strongly affect consumption?
Blasting speed directly increases impact energy. Higher speed generates more abrasive fragmentation and accelerates media wear.
Does larger abrasive consume faster?
Yes. Larger abrasive particles are exposed to higher mechanical stress during impact and may fracture more rapidly.
Are the results equal to actual plant consumption?
No. The calculator provides a technical estimation based on nominal conditions. Real production parameters may significantly change consumption levels.
Why is a stable operating mix important?
A stable abrasive mix improves blasting consistency, process repeatability and surface treatment quality.
When should this calculator be used?
This tool is useful during new machine installation, process adjustments or when planning abrasive replenishment and inventory requirements.
