Three pillars, one partner

Media quality, process control, and performance monitoring are inseparable. W Peening covers all three.

① MEDIA

HD Cut Wire – Made in Altena

Heat-treated cut wire produced in Europe under Japanese Toyo Seiko standards. The only media with zero internal defects and consistent conditioning grades.

– G1, G2, G3 conditioning (VDFI 8001 / SAE J441 / AMS 24-31/8)

– Up to 2x longer lifespan vs. atomized shot

– Steel, stainless steel, aluminum cut wire available

– European production – shorter lead times, supply security

② PROCESS

Shot peening expertise

Two parameters define whether your process is compliant: coverage and intensity. Both require distinct tools, methods, and documented procedures.

– Coverage control (100–120%) via Peenscan UV method

– Intensity – Almen strips N/A/C, certified SAE J442 / AMS 2432

– Saturation curve qualification (SAE J443 / 10% rule)

– Full documentation – Nadcap and OEM audit-ready

③ PERFORMANCE

W Care monitoring

Controlling media and process parameters is not enough without ongoing performance verification. W Care closes the loop from abrasive quality to residual stress validation.

– Operating mix analysis – sieve test, Blast Check Kit

– Machine audit – wear parts, nozzle, flow consistency

– XRD (X-ray diffraction) for residual stress qualification

– Annual service contracts and on-site diagnostics

Why shot peening is different from shot blasting

and why it matters

Most surface treatment failures in peening come from treating it like a cleaning operation.

CRITICAL STAGE

Shot peening is the final manufacturing stage before assembly. Applied on high-value, safety-critical components – gears, springs, landing gear, connecting rods.

INVISIBLE PROCESS

You cannot visually verify compressive residual stresses. The only absolute proof is XRD — a destructive test impossible to run on every part in production.

DUAL CONTROL REQUIRED

Coverage and intensity are independent parameters. Each requires specific tools and methods. Getting one right does not validate the other.

MEDIA IS NOT INTERCHANGEABLE

As-cut wire is banned from peening applications. Only conditioned cut wire (G1/G2/G3) or certified peening shot delivers controlled, repeatable compressive stress.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) - the ultimate validation

XRD is the only method that directly measures residual compressive stress in a component – up to 2,000 µm deep. It confirms whether your shot peening process actually delivered the required stress profile, not just whether your Almen reading was within spec.

XRD X-Ray analysis on gear

When we use XRD

– Process qualification on new components

– Incident investigation (early fatigue, non-conformance)

– Periodic process audit

– Change validation (new media, machine relocation, nozzle replacement)
